Sub Tub @ music box 23.03.02
Another Sub Tub @ Music Box: Sub Tub was a seminal club-night in Manchester. Originally held at UMIST with a built-in skate ramp & a music policy of presenting the best UK & US hip-hop acts as well as introducing D'n'B to the student/skater crowd. Resident DJs were Jon K, Roscoe, Sam Pepper, Western, Gooseman & MC DRS. I attended a couple, very drunk, sans camera
By the time it had moved to Music Box I was working on the Club Guide for City Life magazine. They used a crowd-shot from this night, taken from the DJ booth, to advertise a future Sub Tub event. This event though, touring to promote their 4th Ninja Tune LP 'Something Wicked This Way Comes', Herbaliser with MC Wildflower. I first heard Wildflower on Roots Manuva 'Baptism' before the fantastic 3-way lady emcee cut 'Domestic Science', Skitz ft. Wildflower, Tempa & Estelle. Then 'Good Girl Gone Bad with Herbaliser
As much as I enjoyed Herbaliser it was Wildflower I had come to see. She seemed very shy, unusual in microphone controllers, and avoided my camera. She was hard work. I was very close to her on a tiny stage though. My flash was obviously disturbing her performance. She did two short sets, but I only shot the first. Went backstage instead with Red Stripe lager & Red Seal hash for company
Another further treat was watching two of Manchester's favourite MCs (Bandit & Real-Deal soon to change monikers to become Karmic Evolution & Strategy, respectively) take to the stage & easily take the Sub Tub crowd in the palm of their hand. It was at one of these seminal nights that Broke'n'English was conceived...
