Annual Hulme summer event the Punks Picnic took place Saturday August 17th (night before) on Settle Walk. When I turned up late morning, many of them still littered the floor. An old converted van we dubbed 'The Ambience Ambulance' blared out scratchy old punk records in the sunshine. Sheffield Crew arrived first to paint the whitewashed boards. Slowly other Hulme heads showed. Hip-hop took over on the decks. A classic car with 'BOOZE' dubbed down its' side acted as makeshift bar

Demon Smurf, breakdancer Evo came down and, once a piece of kitchen floor vinyl had been procured from an empty flat, he amazed us all with his power moves. One of the original Street Machine B-Boy crew from Manchester in the mid-'80's. Former members also inc. MC Buzz B, Kermit (Ruthless Rap Assassins / Black Grape) & Jason Orange (Take That). We were (open-mouthed) impressed. I offered him reefer as reward. He shook his head, "No thanks". Offered him my cold beer instead. "Don't drink mate". Of course you don't. Not long after he started to appear on-stage for the Prodigy & went off on their world tour... A humble fellah from Manchester who went on to win 3 World Championship titles, travel the world & inspire a whole new generation. It's an over-used phrase but his Living Legend cap certainly fits! Rhino (Street Machine) was a SMEAR JAM regular. That's him with the Tennessee beard. D-Lo (DJ Buckwild) & MC Eric-T kept up the hip-hop vibe in the afternoon sun. Painting on the day were Aime, Arise, Ask, Burn, Cryer, Damien, Dial, Force, Kelzo, Mist-One, MKS, Risk, Sune, Tags, Tempt-One & Zed. More people from the community came down, even brought their kids along. It was a gorgeous Sunday. B-Boys, Punks & Ravers. All ages, races & creeds. The sun shone forever. Dropped ecstasy in the middle of the afternoon. Happy days
