The Red Admiral once sat on the corner of Boundary Lane & indicated the beginning of Hulme Walk, which went straight through the estate (following old Stretford Road), passed Woodcock Square shops, St. Phillips Primary School, over the footbridge above Princess Parkway & on toward the Crescents. Inner-City Artists Karl-123 & Kelz first painted the boarded-up public house back in 1995
Now new Stretford Road had been re-established, the footbridge replaced, the Red Admiral pub was once again on a main thoroughfare in Manchester. Kelzo repainted it August 1997. “Educate” was a message to everyone passing through new Hulme that the mistakes of the past should not be repeated. This was over-painted by Kelzo in November that year
February ’98 Kelzo, Tags & Shine (RIP) painted Proctors Youth Club. Kelzo & Tags re-licked same Proctors spot in June. On March 8th Kelzo covers the other side of the Red Admiral building alongside Eko & Tasle. Six weeks later Tags, Phew, Kelso, Nome, Spaz, Shine (RIP) & Zisto paint right around the deconsecrated Wesley Methodist church
Sun June 7th 1998 was 2nd Northern Quarter Street Festival in Manchester city-centre. Kelz repainted boards on Oldham St. previously covered beautifully by Mode-2 courtesy of Arc-Art. In July & August another two (each more manic) Smear Jams took place on Old Birley St. Hulme. With these last deck-access flats finally knocked flat, meaning that new places left to paint were few & far between, Takes & Kelzo hit Hulme Hippodrome / NIA Centre that November
Before demolition & being briefly turned into the Arch Bar, a place with its’ own chequered history, the Red Admiral received its’ final redecoration the following summer, August 1999. From the back, Skode, Nome, Nero, BSE, Ska, Kut, Kelso & Dets. It would be a long time before any graffiti art appeared in Hulme again
