Friends & Family @ the-roadhouse 18.11.00

5 months on from amazing Futuresonic performance @ Contact & debut 2-Player EP (Grand Central) already sporting their iconic Chris Dury characters (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YD1G1WL6Q0U); Fingathing present their LP The Main Event (Grand Central) at this new Fat City Records clubnight. A strange collection of sketches & pieces of music stitched boyishly together by Sneaky (bass) & Peter Parker (DJ) who employ various strengths in equal measure; As multi-instrumentalist & proven turntablist; As musicians & beat-makers

Already a locally renowned hip-hop rhythm section at seminal Eardrum night @ Dry Bar & subsequently drafted into the Rae & Christian (Grand Central) live-band, project Fingathing grew out of improvised jams in between time, messing around much the same as drummers & bass players often do. Allegedly they also bonded through a shared interest in Marvel Comics, science-fiction & wrestling

The surprise is that the two of them manage to generate so many ideas from such a basic premise. Grand Central obviously thought so. As a new 'live' prospect I was slightly less surprised than those who were gathered into the Roadhouse basement that November night, as I had seen their double-bass & decks combination before! The crowd at Friends & Family though were unwittingly in for a real treat!

Another recent Grand Central signing and new Friends & Family resident Henry Smithson AKA Riton opens up the evening alongside mc Spikey-T before Fingathing take to the stage. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3MtIaj1U7o&feature=related) The Main Event. Tracks are sample-based loops, improvised rhythms, funky workouts, dexterous turntablism, overblown comic-book gestures, silly schoolboy noises amongst an emotive string quartet, ambience & accent against hard-edged hip-hop, an authoritarian sci-fi voice-over, melodrama soundtrack dynamics, cello-bowed melodies... silly schoolboy noises amongst an emotive string quartet...

Fingathing simply astound... Leave the Friends & Family crowd completely bowled over with only Riton & Spikey T left to pick it up & carry on into the night
