BLACK STYLES UK (PYMCA)
October is Black History Month and this year Contact will celebrate the cultural effects of black influence in spoken-word poetry, contemporary dance & electronic music with four events spread over one weekend. Always one-to-watch for interesting leftfield events, the good people at Contact present a Black Sound Series
Thurs 30 Sept Contact launched Black Styles UK: "An exploration of the immeasurable impact of black subculture on all aspects of British life", a selection of iconic images from http://www.pymca.com/ PYMCA (Photographic Youth Culture Music Archive) an exhibition to act as a unifying theme to weekend events & in context of Black History Month. My own contribution is shown below
On the very same evening Black Sound Series #1 Spoken Word All-Stars an evening of performance poetry. Fri 1 Oct Black Sound Series #2 was billed as UKG vs D'n'B vs Future Sounds with Murkage Cartel, Broke'n'English, Fallacy, Zed Bias, Marcus Intalex & DRS
Sat 2 Oct Black Sound Series #3 was Mixed Movements: Digital Duets, hosted by hip-hop legend Baba Israel. Also performances from African dancer Lati Saka and Contact’s own Shock Out. Black Sound Series #4 Dance Africa / Remember Kela followed celebrating the musical influence of legendary African musician Kela Futi. Hosted by UK rapper Ty and featuring Afronaught, Zepherin Saint & event-organiser Irfan Rainy
