A BIT OF PERSONAL
Two people who came through our doors at FIX (Northern Quarter) were Jon Van Aitken & David Eaton representing a photographers' collective who'd just successfully applied for Arts Council & Lottery funding to organise a Manchester contribution to (nationwide) Photo'98 festival. New Exposure was a simultaneous series of city-wide exhibitions involving 16 different venues & 22 different photographers. They invited me to be a part of it
At initial meetings with New Exposure photographers seeds were sown for what would become Redeye Photographers Network. Excited by Seb Pattendens images of nocturnal train-bombing, I dragged him along & made sure he was part of it. FIX had drawn a line for me under nearly 4 years of graffiti photography, I wanted to show something else. I knew I still had some strong images taken in & around Hulme (both places & people) as a unique way of life accelerated toward its' own annihilation...
A BIT OF PERSONAL was held at Sandbar (Grosvenor St.) with one print included at Generation X (New Wakefield St.), event hub for the summer duration of New Exposure. Audrey Linkman (Documentary Photography Archive) came to host a talk. Sponsorship came from NWAB, Ilford & National Lottery. Opening night saw local DJs from LooseCaboose + TNT. In fact attending each photographers opening night almost gave me cirrhosis of the liver
