Sub Tub @ music box 02.06.02

It seemed like a good idea at the time! Taking advantage of a celebratory surge of sudden nationalism, (& more importantly the long Bank Holiday weekend), the good people behind Sub Tub decided that the best way to mark our monarchs 'golden' reign over our (submissive & subversive in equal measure) Little England was to organise a late-licence shindig in her name. How idiotic/patriotic!

An event that over-stretched itself over 3 rooms, taking over Jillys'/Rockworld as well as Music Box, but it seemed there was a lot on the bill to cram in. A sunny England vs Sweden earlier on in the day meant there was a boozy atmosphere across Manchester but it failed to ignite this promotion completely. Instead there were sparks of greatness you had to seek out

In Rockworlds' main room Ninja Tune reigned supreme with New Flesh (Big Dada) and the supremely talented Ty (Big Dada) with DJ Billy Bizzniss. Ty did his best with a reluctant Manchester crowd, lackadaisical & lazily clinging to the edges of the room. DJ Vadim (Ninja Tune) headlined this room, an impeccable set alongside his reggae-inflected MC Demolition Man, with local hip-hopster Vic Singh jumping on-stage for impromptu beat-box accompaniment

The only 'live' act proper I made sure that I caught, RSL (Sub Tub Players) rammed out their room until there wasn't enough space left for air to breathe. Tracks like 'Beatflicker', 'Wesley Music', and 'Magic Of Spain' (from Sub Tub Players EP) was on obvious highlight

Back in Music Box I caught DJ sets from Sub Tub residents Jon K early on & Roscoe (a bit bug-eyed & worse for wear) later on. This room was all about Scratch Perverts though. Prime Cuts & Plus One took us on another musical journey taking in hip-hop classics from every era, a smattering from this side of the Atlantic Pond, morphing into break-beat & D'n'B and back again. BPM gradually notching up with the uncomfortable heat

It was almost light when I fell out of Music Box onto Oxford Road. But it's a short wind home with a warm Red Stripe in your hand. God Bless you Queen Lizzie & all your bastard off-spring. 'They made you a moron...', now why didn't anyone drop THAT (Sex Pistols - 'God Save The Queen') into their sets tonight? Cheers my dears... Here's to another 50 years!
