IMPROVISE

As Seb Pattenden and I ran around in 1997 like headless chickens attempting to fund, organise & promote our very first exhibition, someone we turned to was Ear to the Ground, an events company based in the Beehive Mills, Ancoats

They were right in the middle of organising their own huge one-off Re-Percussion event to commemorate the regeneration of our city centre following the (15.06.96) IRA bombing. A free all-day music festival in Castlefield, with multiple stages being built and bars becoming venues. An eventual success, City Council funding secured, D-Percussion became an annual occasion, running for 10 years until a final event in 2007

Ear to the Ground not only helped us with various contacts & potential sponsors, they also offered us a companion exhibition at Atlas Bar, by Deansgate train station. We were both delighted & immediately accepted

We decided that, since FIX was about graffiti & skateboarding in Manchester, and Seb had some wicked skate-shots from a festival in France which were not going to be included; this was a perfect opportunity to show them. All that was needed was for me to come up with a similar short edit of images that would be as self-contained as Sebs' Sunburn entitled Montpellier selection. I went with a recent day spent with Hulme artist Kelzo. This piece was called Improvise so I took that as the title for my contribution. Each photographer had 8 prints shown at Atlas, these stayed up after the Re-Percussions event and then shown again at Sandbar. (Other photographs shot from that same session are now also included here)

In the midst of mounting our FIX exhibition for Northern Quarter Street Festival the very next day; painting walls & hammering nails, sending out press packs & handing out flyers; we had to run to Ancoats to pick up boxes of gratis Adidas gear, then dash to Atlas to hang 16 prints before the event kicked off. We were still hanging frames as punters came in. It was a good pre-run for our own exhibition which was being constantly described by us both as a "F***in steep learning-curve"
