Hulme Graffiti (13)

Commissioned by Hulme Regeneration Ltd. to paint a mural the length of an old Moss Lane East pub (which at the time was playing host to local market-traders left without business since Moss Side Precinct was demolished), Hulme born-&-bred graffiti artist Kelzo turns up with customary holdall of car-body paints & I tag along with (t)rusty camera, b&w film & colour transparency in my pockets

Soon after Kelzo hit-up this piece entitled 'Improvise' on the edges of the now fenced-in Bonsall St & Otterburn Close. Former site of 2 SMEAR Jams in its' final throes and, of course, so much more bohemian revelry down through the concrete years. A small edit of these photographs were my contribution, a FIX companion exhibition @ Atlas Bar, to the very 1st Re-Percussions Castlefield music festival

As summer burned & then poured I had my 1st exhibition FIX (with Seb Pattenden, other side of FIX being his Manchester & the Cult of the Skateboard images), which featured examples of graffiti taken over this 4 year period. Sadly its' central star missed our monumental opening night & the whole exhibition!

Kelzo was fulfilling a lifelong ambition & disappeared to NYC to paint. He actually dubbed the shutters of Pauls Boutique! As featured on seminal Beastie Boys LP cover of the same name! He had many proud photos to show off. This was only the beginning, returning to the States, then to Barcelona, Milan, Rome & Oslo; taking his incrementally evolving style & 3-D lettering abroad in what would amount to the burgeoning career of a recognised & respected International Artist
