Criminally under-represented during the recent HomeGrown (The Story of UK Hip Hop) exhibition @ the Urbis Arts Centre was Manchester institution Fat City Records & the contribution it made to our musical heritage

Friends & Family @ the Roadhouse grew out of long-standing symbiotic relationship between Fat City (one-stop hip-hop record shop) & local Grand Central recording artists. Previous monthly event Counter Culture, first at Night&Day and then Planet K, at a time when Oldham St & the Northern Quarter had sprung into new life; with both shop, label and both venues within spitting distance

I was resident photographer at Planet K then and Counter Culture was always a roadblock event, so when (with a new venue, name-change & switch to a weekly club-night) it upped sticks & moved around a corner or two to a much-smaller cellar club (the Roadhouse) in an attempt both to keep down costs & help promote sales, (-& now falling into a weekend slot vacated by Electric Chair who had found their new permanent home at Music Box-), I followed with my battered old Pentax...

This Pre-Christmas Party sees long-time Counter Culture / Friends-&-Family residents Aim (Grand Central) & Mark Rae (Grand Central) take to the decks. One of the first of many, many nights I spent in that dank hot basement warm Red Stripe bliss...
