FIX

(Photographer friend) Seb Pattenden was so engrossed in the subculture he was documenting that he had little time for anything else. Encouraged to collect a frenzied period of productivity together into a more cohesive collection, an exhibition, he made a few early connections. Friends who said they'd lend a hand. Promises of help, including Ear to the Ground & the Northern Quarter Association

He invited me aboard. Our work definitely complemented each other. We both shot B&W film (processed & printed by hand). Both resident in Manchester but not born here. Seb was into skateboarding & was shooting inside their free-wheeling world. We decided to work together. Two idiots being somehow better than one. It worked surprisingly well (Photographers are usually lone beasts!) Between us we got things done. We even edited each others work. Choosing 80 transparencies (a carousel full) to accompany our 40 B&W prints

A long trawl of empty properties ensued. We eventually secured a 3-storey shop space on Edge St. A room for each 20 print selection, & combined colour slides projected downstairs. We printed & framed the exhibition ourselves. Designed & printed our own flyers. Handed them all out. A lot of leg work

Opening night was successful! Our drink sponsor pulled last minute so Tib St. Off-Licence did a roaring trade! Loads of heads turned out, as the Northern Quarter Street Festival had already been going all-day. Kold DJ Reko played & people partied into the early hours

A 3rd floor toilet began to overflow around midnight. Dark puddle spreading unstoppably. It soon began to soak through & drip from the ceiling below (we had to remove a couple of Sebs' prints from the wall!). Police came back around 3 a.m. Decided to call it a day. Couldn't find the keys to lock up! I'd left them behind in a curry house! Next day when we returned large ceiling boards had become so sodden they'd collapsed. We tidied best we could & opened up. Which we then did daily for the next 3 weeks. Friends & strangers dropping by (over from Leeds, Liverpool & Sheffield), sometimes just to sit on our sofa & watch the slideshow

Many thanks go to Addidas, Ian Povey @ Area News, Bored Skates, City Life, Steve Smith @ Ear to the Ground, Ian H.Stanistreet @ Stevens Scanlan, Sarah Purvis @ NQA, NorthWestArts Board & SUMO skateshop for helping take FIX over to Sheffield that autumn
