DRUM'n'BASS (North-West)

As a photographer kicking around Manchester club-land I've captured Drum'n'Bass events throughout the Noughties. I continue to document MC / DJ culture as it morphs, merges & mutates through UK Hip-Hop, Jungle, UK-Garage, Drum'n'Bass, Grime & Dubstep

Original Jungle music came with a (-undeserved?-) reputation, with police often never very far away. Many great promotions were quickly shut down. In Manchester both Home nightclub & the Hacienda had pioneering Jungle nights closed before they even got going

Since then were heady days of mid-90's jungle: Guidance @ Sankeys Soap, Dumb Dumb @ Deansgate Station Bar, Eardrum @ Dry, Transmission @ Kaleida, Spellbound @ Band On The Wall, the legendary Darkhouse (PSV Club) in Hulme. Each night had a short but memorable lifespan

By the time Spellbound moved to new Northern Quarter club Planet K , Eardrum had had a change of music policy. Both Dumb Dumb & Guidance disappeared. Transmission had several venue changes, lost its audience. Lighthouse / PSV was closed & bulldozed flat!!

Soon after opening I became resident photographer at Planet K. At the time I was freelancing for City Life, Jockey Slut & Level Magazine. Later I worked irregularly for both Atmosphere (ATM) and Knowledge (kmag) Leaders in specialist music publishing. I continued to document Spellbound (long after Planet K ceased to be), several memorable Soul:ution nights, the mighty Metropolis, plus many other d'n'b promotions: Ape, AudioSalad, Gutterfunk, Hit-&-Run, Platoon, Rollin' Sounds, Soundscape and Viagra Fools

Featured here are archive photographs (all shot on b&w or colour film) which make up a major contribution to the Drum'n'Bass exhibition @ Urbis Arts Centre, Manchester which explored the growth of the north-west scene. Opening night certainly rattled the rafters of Urbis like never before: DJ sets from Shortee (USA), Prophecy (Metropolis), Mr Brown (Platoon), Deval (Soundscape), Dawn Raid and Levity
